Football icon Zinedine Zidane has opened up about turning down multiple high-profile coaching offers while holding out for his ultimate ambition—leading the French national team.
At his introductory press conference as Les Bleus’ new manager, the World Cup winner confirmed this was the only job he actively pursued after ending his successful tenure at Real Madrid.
“For the last five years, I’ve consistently rejected club opportunities knowing this was my true calling,” Zidane revealed to Sky Sports.
The former midfielder acknowledged receiving numerous approaches from elite European clubs.
“This national team role was the singular position I envisioned after my Madrid departure,” he emphasized.
“My passion for France extends beyond fandom—I’ve always seen myself guiding this squad,” Zidane added, explaining his club-side rejection.
The 1998 World Champion expressed gratitude toward predecessor Didier Deschamps while confirming his readiness for the challenge.
“Nothing in football carries greater prestige than serving your country,” Zidane stated. “This appointment fills me with immense pride and sober responsibility. Emotionally charged and fully prepared, I’ll dedicate every ounce to our success.
“My special acknowledgment goes to Deschamps for his extraordinary legacy. Now begins our new chapter.”
Zidane’s appointment follows Deschamps’ departure after France’s World Cup campaign.
