Nollywood star Yvonne Jegede has voiced her disillusionment with Nigeria, stating that citizens are undeserving of advocacy due to persistent hostility toward those who criticize systemic issues.
In a candid social media post, the actress revealed she faces relentless backlash whenever she highlights societal problems, seemingly referencing First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s recent call for celebrities like Davido and Burna Boy to champion poverty-alleviation efforts.
Jegede challenged the notion that hardworking taxpayers should bear additional burdens meant for the government, pointing out that despite funding public services through taxes, citizens are still pressured to bridge gaps created by mismanagement. She insinuated that tax revenues often serve elite interests rather than public welfare.
The actress admitted the nation’s deteriorating state has severely impacted her mental well-being, adding that vocalizing Nigeria’s harsh realities only invites more vitriol. This, she said, explains why many opt for silence amid crises.
While emphasizing her upbringing compels her to confront injustice, Jegede lamented that pervasive intolerance makes Nigerians, in her opinion, unworthy of her advocacy.
