Nigerian entertainer Yeni Kuti has opened up about the intimate details of her mother’s romantic life following her separation from Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.
During a recent television interview, Yeni revealed that her mother, Remilekun Anikulapo-Kuti, remained single for over two decades until her demise, choosing not to engage in any romantic relationships.
The dancer disclosed that her mother’s unwavering love for Fela kept her from remarrying or dating anyone else after their split in 1981.
Yeni shared that even when diagnosed with cancer later in life, Remilekun affirmed her devotion to her former husband during medical examinations.
She recounted: “Intimacy plays a crucial role in marriage, but celibacy remains a personal decision. After leaving my father’s home in 1981, my mother never took another partner until her passing in 2002.
“Her commitment puzzled me at first. During a medical checkup, when questioned about her prolonged abstinence, she simply responded, ‘Fela is the only man for me.'”
