Yeni Kuti, the daughter of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has finally addressed the social media feud between her brother, Seun Kuti, and global superstar Wizkid.
Earlier this week, Seun Kuti engaged in a heated exchange with Wizkid’s fanbase, criticizing comparisons between the singer’s impact and their father’s legendary Afrobeat influence.
The clash intensified when Seun challenged Wizkid to stand up for his fans, prompting the Grammy-winning artist to retaliate with a bold statement: “I’m bigger than your father.” His declaration ignited a firestorm online, dividing opinions among fans and fellow artists.
Critics condemned Wizkid for his perceived disrespect toward Fela, while others blamed Seun for provoking the confrontation. The dispute quickly escalated into a broader debate about the musical legacies of both icons.
Amid the uproar, Yeni Kuti refrained from joining the fray. During an appearance on TVC’s ‘Your View,’ she described Wizkid as a close friend, highlighting their long-standing bond. She reminisced about Wizkid’s early days as a backup singer at the Afrika Shrine and emphasized unity in celebrating Fela’s legacy.
Yeni remarked, “Wizkid is my padi. I adore him. When two heavyweights clash, it’s the onlookers who suffer. I’ve avoided engaging in the insults because my love for Wizkid runs deep. We’ve shared many moments, and there’s no way I could turn against him.”
She continued, “This feud should never overshadow Fela’s enduring influence. He pioneered Afrobeat, shaping music history. Those attacking him now fail to grasp that his name still resonates 27 years after his passing—proof of his greatness. Let’s honor his legacy, not diminish it. Fight amongst yourselves if you must, but let the legend rest in peace.”
