Yeni Kuti

Yeni Kuti, a prominent Nigerian media figure, has slammed musicians who attempt to measure their success against her late father, Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

This comes after Wizkid stirred controversy by asserting he is “greater” than Fela during a heated exchange with Seun Kuti, Fela’s son.

Speaking to Arise TV after accepting Fela’s posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammys, Yeni emphasized that Fela’s enduring influence decades after his passing speaks volumes.

She dismissed comparisons as misguided, stressing that Fela’s legacy transcends contemporary debates.

Yeni urged today’s artists to honor Fela’s contributions rather than undermine them by equating their careers with his.

She advised musicians to benchmark themselves against their contemporaries instead of a cultural titan.

Yeni stated, “Fela remains an immortal legend—celebrate him for his unparalleled impact.

“Why measure your fleeting success against an eternal icon? That’s not just unfair—it’s disrespectful.

“Focus on your generation’s achievements and let history judge Fela’s greatness independently.”
