Afrobeats star Seun Kuti has sparked controversy with claims that a high-profile Nigerian family suffered a devastating loss—both emotionally and financially—seeking spiritual intervention for a loved one’s terminal cancer.
A viral video captures Kuti detailing the family’s ordeal, where they reportedly abandoned medical advice abroad in favor of faith-based healing at Nigeria’s Redeemed Christian Church of God camp.
Kuti claimed that despite doctors declaring the case hopeless, the family repatriated the patient, believing prayer would reverse her condition. He alleged the woman’s final days were spent amidst intense worship sessions and assurances of divine healing.
The artist stated the woman ultimately succumbed to her illness within the church premises, leaving relatives distraught after investing approximately $250,000 in the spiritual treatment.
Kuti further contended that Pastor Enoch Adeboye initially encouraged the grieving family, directing them to kneel beside the deceased while he prayed for resurrection—an attempt that allegedly proved unsuccessful after prolonged supplication.
This account has ignited debate about the ethics of promoting miraculous healing for terminal conditions. The musician emphasized how such practices can create false expectations while compounding grief with significant financial burdens.
In his raw narration, Kuti mimicked the family’s shock: “Foreign doctors said nothing could be done—prepare for the inevitable. But this wealthy Nigerian woman refused to accept it. They brought her to Adeboye’s camp… Only for her to pass away there. After spending a fortune, they carried her body to the pastor who claimed he’d revive her through prayer. When nothing happened, they were simply told it was God’s will.”
