Media personality Ifedayo Olarinde, popularly called Daddy Freeze, has shared his perspective on the ongoing debate comparing Afrobeats superstar Wizkid to the iconic Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
In a candid statement, Daddy Freeze dismissed the comparisons, emphasizing that Fela’s legacy extends far beyond music into activism and social change.
He highlighted that Fela was not only a musical pioneer but also a fearless human rights advocate whose impact resonated globally.
During a recent broadcast, Daddy Freeze challenged Wizkid to match Fela’s activism before any meaningful comparison could be made.
He remarked, “Wizkid must be willing to confront systemic oppression and risk his freedom like Fela did before such comparisons hold weight. Fela wasn’t just an artist—he was a revolutionary.
“Did you know authorities released Fela from prison fearing public outrage if he died in custody? That’s the level of influence he commanded. I witnessed this firsthand as a university student in 1995.
“Fela’s music was inseparable from his fight for justice. His lyrics challenged dictators, and his actions inspired generations. You can’t discuss his artistry without acknowledging his activism.”
“Until Wizkid stands against oppression like Fela did, any comparison falls short. Fela risked everything—his freedom, his safety—for the people. That’s legacy.”
