Super Eagles and Atalanta star Ademola Lookman has called his switch from England to Nigeria one of the finest decisions in his football journey.
Born in England to Nigerian parents, Lookman initially represented England’s youth teams, competing in the U-19 European Championships and securing victory at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
In an interview with Arise TV, the current African Footballer of the Year stated, “Absolutely. It transformed my career and my life. Everyone knows this. Nigeria is my home, my roots—I am truly a son of the soil.”
The 27-year-old credits his achievements to discipline, perseverance, and relentless commitment.
He remarked, “Self-belief and daily hard work are key. When you put in the effort consistently, confidence grows, and eventually, rewards follow. Every single day, I strive to improve—on and off the pitch. That mindset keeps me moving forward.”
Reflecting on his prestigious CAF honor, Lookman expressed immense gratitude.
“It’s incredible and such an honor. Standing among football’s greatest names with this award is truly humbling.”
“I’m bringing it back to Lagos—Phase 2, where I spent my childhood. That’s where it belongs. Presenting it to the president is a privilege.”
Despite his success, Lookman insists retirement is not on his horizon, viewing his career as an ongoing journey.
“Retirement? Not even a thought. There’s still so much ahead—this is just another chapter in a long, exciting journey,” he emphasized.
Lookman recently revisited Lagos, presenting his CAF award to President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during an emotional homecoming.
