Egypt’s women’s national football team has sparked curiosity at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) by displaying seven prominent stars above their crest – despite never having won the tournament.
The unexpected badge design has left spectators speculating about potential unrecorded achievements before the truth emerged.
In reality, these stars pay homage to the unparalleled success of Egypt’s men’s national team rather than the women’s squad.
Each golden star represents one of the men’s seven historic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victories – a tournament record spanning from 1957 to 2010.
“Women’s team jerseys bearing men’s achievements isn’t uncommon in African football,” noted sports analyst Fatima Diallo. “It’s about national football pride, though some argue for distinct recognition.”
While their male counterparts dominate AFCON history with trophies in 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010, the women’s team remains an emerging force seeking their first WAFCON breakthrough.
The Egyptian Football Association maintains this unified branding represents the nation’s collective football identity. “Those stars symbolize Egyptian football excellence at all levels,” stated spokesperson Amir Hassan.
The ongoing tournament has highlighted this unique case of achievement representation, prompting discussions about how football federations balance recognition between genders while fostering women’s football development.
