Sunday Oliseh

Ex-Super Eagles skipper and coach, Sunday Oliseh, has revealed the struggles he endured while managing Nigeria’s national football team, citing a lack of basic training resources as a major hurdle.

The Juventus legend took charge of the Super Eagles in 2015 following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.

During an episode of his YouTube series, Oliseh shed light on the dire working conditions, emphasizing the absence of essential training gear.

Speaking on the Oliseh’s Global Football Insights Podcast, he stated, “Coaching the Super Eagles was tough—we didn’t even have basic equipment.”

Oliseh recounted instances where training sessions were delayed because the team lacked spare jerseys, forcing players to wait for their morning kits to dry after washing.

“There were days we couldn’t train on schedule because the players had to wait for their washed jerseys to dry,” he revealed.

He expressed disbelief at the situation, stressing that a football-loving nation like Nigeria should effortlessly attract sponsors and secure necessary gear.

“It was baffling. A country with such football passion shouldn’t struggle to get sponsors or basic kits,” Oliseh remarked.

Despite these obstacles, Oliseh achieved notable success, guiding the CHAN Eagles to qualification for the African Nations Championship in Rwanda.

Under his leadership, the senior team lost only two matches, netting 19 goals and conceding six in 14 games before his resignation in February 2016.
