Renowned Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, known as AY, has spoken out following the shocking road accident involving British-Nigerian boxing icon Anthony Joshua, holding the government accountable for the tragedy.
The incident occurred on Monday when Joshua’s Lexus SUV (registration: KRD 850 HN) collided with a parked truck along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State’s Makun area. Two lives were lost, while the champion boxer escaped with minor injuries.
Expressing his grief on Instagram, AY described the accident as a reflection of systemic failures—calling out Nigeria’s deteriorating road conditions, ineffective safety measures, and leadership shortcomings.
The comedian’s emotional post read: “This heartbreaking incident underscores how little value is placed on human life in our nation. A global superstar like Anthony Joshua returns home, only for tragedy to strike—two promising lives cut short by preventable circumstances. These were individuals with loved ones, ambitions, and purpose. This isn’t misfortune; it’s neglect—failed infrastructure, failed governance, and a reckless disregard for safety.”
He continued, “How many more must perish before our roads become safe? We cannot continue applauding Nigeria’s excellence abroad while endangering our citizens at home. Enough is enough. A nation that fails to safeguard its people demands urgent accountability.
We deserve functional roads, stricter enforcement, emergency preparedness, and leadership that prioritizes lives over political rhetoric. My deepest condolences to Joshua and the grieving families—may their loved ones rest in peace. Nigeria must rise to this challenge.”
