Van Hunt, the longtime partner of Oscar-winning superstar Halle Berry, has shared that he popped the question—but the actress isn’t rushing to say “yes” just yet.
“I made the proposal, and it’s still up in the air,” he revealed to Today.com following their joint interview on the June 4 episode of Today with Jenna & Friends. “It’s hanging in the balance. Maybe you can nudge her in the right direction.”
When asked about her hesitation, Berry explained that their past marriages have shaped their perspective—they don’t need a ring to prove their commitment.
“I’ve walked down the aisle three times. Van’s been married once. We don’t believe marriage is the only way to validate what we have. It’s just not necessary,” Berry stated.
The actress was previously wed to Oliver Martinez, ex-MLB star David Justice, and musician Eric Benét. She shares a son with Martinez and a daughter with ex-partner Gabriel Aubry.
Despite her current stance, Berry hasn’t ruled out marrying Hunt in the future.
“I think we will eventually tie the knot—not out of obligation, but because he’s the one I was meant to marry,” Berry admitted. “It’s about celebrating our love in a way that feels right for us. No pressure, just pure intention.”
Pressed for a timeline, she teased, “Soon.”
The couple made their relationship public in September 2020.
Insiders told PEOPLE they had been dating for months before going official, and Hunt had already bonded with Berry’s kids—daughter Nahla, 17, and son Maceo, 11.
In a candid Marie Claire cover story that same month, Berry gushed about Hunt, saying: “For the first time, I fell head over heels before intimacy even entered the picture.”
“That was a first for me,” she continued. “A transformative, breathtaking experience. Pure magic.”
