Renowned Nigerian songstress Waje has revealed she received no compensation for her iconic contribution to P-Square’s 2007 chart-topping single ‘Do Me.’
The award-winning vocalist shared this startling admission during a candid conversation on the HonestBunch Podcast.
With raw honesty, the powerhouse vocalist stated, “Not a single naira came my way for lending my voice to P-Square’s ‘Do Me.’”
Though Aituaje Iruobe (Waje’s birth name) delivered the unforgettable chorus that made the track a national anthem, her name was conspicuously absent from the credits.
The songstress described the surreal experience of hearing her own voice blaring across markets while bystanders doubted her claims: “Picture this – I’m in Onitsha market, pointing at speakers playing ‘Do Me,’ telling everyone it’s me… they just laughed in disbelief.”
Ironically, this uncredited performance became Waje’s breakthrough moment in Nigeria’s competitive music industry. She further clarified that logistical hurdles – including lacking travel documents – kept her from appearing in the song’s popular music video.
The controversial track featured on P-Square’s third studio album, ‘Game Over,’ which dominated airwaves across Africa in 2007.
