Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk has revealed that Victor Osimhen continues to battle discomfort from an injury sustained while playing for Nigeria, though he is slated to return to the pitch shortly.
The 26-year-old forward suffered the setback last week during his national team duties and promptly flew back to Turkey for medical care. Galatasaray issued a statement regarding his status on their official site.
Osimhen missed Saturday’s 2-0 win against Eyupspor, but Buruk is confident in his progress ahead of their vital UEFA Champions League debut.
“Osimhen’s status will be clearer in the next few days. We’re optimistic he’ll be fit. He’s still feeling some pain, but we believe he’ll play,” Buruk shared with the club’s media team.
Galatasaray kicks off their Champions League campaign against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday, and Buruk hopes to have his top striker ready for the fixture.
Osimhen, who made a high-profile switch from Napoli to Galatasaray this offseason, is pivotal to the Turkish giants’ European aspirations. He previously helped Napoli secure their first Serie A title in over three decades in 2023 and claimed the African Footballer of the Year honor.
His recovery will be closely watched, with Nigerian supporters also keen on his fitness ahead of next month’s World Cup qualifying matches.
