Nollywood icon Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has reignited discussions about the urgent need for industry-wide reforms in Nigeria’s entertainment sector, spotlighting the glaring disparities between Hollywood’s structured royalty system and Nollywood’s current practices.
Taking to her Instagram story, the screen legend shared a striking revelation about the financial rewards from her brief Hollywood engagements versus her extensive Nollywood career.
With an impressive 30-year tenure in Nollywood and over 310 film credits, Omotola expressed frustration at the industry’s lack of residual payments – a standard practice in Hollywood where actors earn ongoing compensation for their work.
The actress disclosed an eye-opening comparison: her mere four-year Hollywood stint with just two minor projects continues to generate regular royalty checks, while her massive Nollywood portfolio yields no such benefits.
“4 years in Hollywood, 2 trial projects = monthly residuals,” she revealed alongside a photo of SAG-AFTRA payment envelopes.
“30 years in Nollywood, 310+ blockbusters = zero residuals,” she countered sharply.
Her powerful message concluded with the rallying cries #NollywoodNeedsStructure and #UnlearntoRelearn, challenging the industry to evolve its compensation framework to match global standards.
