Uriel Oputa

Big Brother Naija alumna Uriel Oputa has condemned the trivialization of cancer diagnoses for online engagement, calling it insensitive and irresponsible.

The outspoken television personality shared an emotional Instagram post emphasizing the gravity of cancer after witnessing controversial claims from another public figure.

While avoiding direct identification, Uriel’s remarks followed influencer Blessing Okoro’s viral announcement about a supposed “stage 4” condition, accompanied by footage showing hair shedding during braid removal.

The online community swiftly questioned the authenticity of Blessing’s claims, with critics suggesting the detached hair appeared to be extensions rather than natural strands. Skeptical responses ranged from demands for medical clarification to accusations of attention-seeking behavior.

Amidst the controversy, some social media users offered prayers while cautioning against potential misinformation about serious health conditions.

Uriel’s impassioned statement read: “IT’S UNBELIEVABLE HOW SOME ARE TREATING CANCER LIKE TRENDING CONTENT.

“VAGUE REFERENCES TO ‘STAGE 4’ WITHOUT CONTEXT OR MEDICAL DETAILS RAISE SERIOUS QUESTIONS. THIS ISN’T HOW PEOPLE GENUINELY DISCUSS LIFE-THREATENING ILLNESSES.

“IF THIS DIAGNOSIS IS ACCURATE, YOU HAVE MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY. THE CRUEL COMMENTS ARE UNWARRANTED IN ANY HEALTH CRISIS.

“BUT IF THIS PROVES MISLEADING, IT REPRESENTS A DANGEROUS NEW LOW. CERTAIN SUBJECTS DEMAND ABSOLUTE RESPECT – CANCER TOPPING THAT LIST.

“NO AMOUNT OF VIRAL POTENTIAL JUSTIFIES EXPLOITING SUFFERING. THIS ISN’T ENTERTAINMENT – IT’S PEOPLE’S LIVED REALITY.”

The reality star continued: “Having witnessed my mother’s breast cancer fight makes this particularly painful. Early detection saved her, but the trauma remains fresh.

“Cancer claims countless lives annually – WHO data shows 10 million deaths globally each year. This isn’t material for social media games.”
