British grime artist Skepta has passionately called for the global music scene to recognize the immense talent within the UK rap community.
The award-winning artist argued that UK rappers often don’t receive their fair share of acclaim in the international arena.
During a fiery appearance on Link UP TV, Skepta revealed his high-profile challenge to American rappers stemmed from a desire to elevate British hip-hop’s standing in the industry.
“This was never about tearing anyone down,” stressed the Tottenham-born performer.
“When I threw down that gauntlet to the US, it came from a place of demanding recognition for our craft – UK artists deserve that spotlight. Could we outperform them? Absolutely. But this is about overdue respect.”
The debate took an interesting turn when superstar Drake stoked the flames at Wireless Festival, openly declaring British rappers unmatched in lyrical warfare.
Midway through his headline set in London, the global icon proclaimed no MCs worldwide could best UK talent in a true battle of wits and rhymes.
