Renowned Nigerian gospel artist Tope Alabi has shared insights into her past romantic struggles, revealing a string of unsuccessful relationships preceding her current marriage.
The celebrated performer behind hits like ‘Oore Ti O Common’ took to Instagram to recount the baffling and distressing experiences she faced in her younger years.
Alabi described how, as she reached the age where introducing a potential partner to her family became customary, an unusual and discouraging pattern emerged.
“When I reached adulthood and it was time to bring suitors to meet my parents, something peculiar always happened. They would claim they needed to pray about it, and then they would simply vanish,” she revealed in an Instagram video.
The 54-year-old composer, known for her work in film music, explained that these rejections often came with spiritual justifications.
She shared that on one occasion, a middleman informed her that a suitor had sought advice from prophets, who had warned him against pursuing a relationship with her.
Alabi estimated that “at least four men quietly exited” her life in this manner.
“A mutual acquaintance once told me that one of the men had consulted prophets who advised him I wasn’t the right match,” she disclosed.
“How could I not remain grateful to God when I reflect on that? Yet, I eventually found love. I can recall about four men who subtly walked away.”
“Ultimately, I met someone. He was introduced through my employer at work. He promised to marry me, but I was skeptical, having heard such promises before. I urged him to gather more information.”
Alabi revealed that before this suitor could formally propose, her father had already arranged her marriage to another man.
“He informed my parents he would return for the official introduction,” she explained.
“We stopped seeing each other. His formal visit became unnecessary because my father had already given my hand in marriage before his departure.”
Previously married to Lekan Olaoye, with whom she has a daughter named Ayomikun, Alabi is now wedded to Soji Alabi, her music producer and manager. Together, they have three children.
