Popular media personality Toke Makinwa has opened up about her decision to stop buying gifts for her romantic partners, tracing this choice back to a heartbreaking experience during her university days.
During a recent episode of her podcast “Toke Moments” featuring reality star Beauty Tukura, Makinwa shared the painful memory of dating an older man who was ten years her senior while she was still a student.
Makinwa recalled how she used her entire semester’s tuition money to organize an expensive birthday dinner at a high-end Italian restaurant in Victoria Island, where her date ordered extravagant meals without hesitation.
The night took a shocking turn when she visited his home later and discovered another woman there, leaving her emotionally shattered and financially strained.
This traumatic incident became a turning point for Makinwa, who vowed never to financially invest in romantic relationships again—a principle she strictly adheres to today.
