TV host Toke Makinwa has opened up about the emotional battles she faced during her previous marriage.
She shared that despite facing criticism and misunderstandings, she felt fortunate to have the courage to leave a toxic situation.
During a candid discussion with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the actress and businesswoman revealed how challenging it was to endure a high-profile relationship while silently dealing with struggles the public couldn’t comprehend.
Makinwa pointed out that society often underestimates survivors, believing their pain wasn’t severe simply because they moved forward.
She observed that instead of being inspired by resilience, people sometimes resent those who rebuild their lives with newfound strength.
“Many assume it couldn’t have been that serious since I survived. But when you rise stronger, it makes people uneasy. Rather than learning from your journey, they view your growth as intimidation. Unless you’ve lived my experience, your opinion doesn’t hold weight,” she stated.
Toke admitted that constant public attention contributed to her decision to end the marriage. Had the relationship been more private, she may have stayed longer.
However, she realized the emotional toll and relentless scrutiny posed a serious risk to her mental and emotional health.
“Maybe I would’ve tried harder if we weren’t in the spotlight. But loving this person with such intensity would’ve destroyed me. Staying would have meant losing myself completely,” she confessed.
The media personality stressed that prioritizing her well-being was non-negotiable, even if leaving required immense personal sacrifice.
