Nigerian track sensation Tobi Amusan secured silver in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday, September 15, narrowly edged out by Switzerland’s rising star.
Kambundji, 23, delivered a jaw-dropping performance, clocking 12.24 seconds to rewrite Swiss athletics history and snatch gold from the reigning world record holder.
Amusan, the 2022 champion, powered through in 12.29 seconds, adding another podium finish to Nigeria’s storied World Championships legacy.
USA’s Grace Stark claimed bronze with 12.34 seconds, while teammate Masai Russell missed the podium after a sluggish start, finishing fourth in 12.44.
Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska matched her season-best 12.49 seconds for fifth, narrowly beating Bahamian Devynne Charlton, who clocked an identical time. Jamaica’s Danielle Williams, last year’s champion, settled for seventh (12.53), with Dutch hurdler Nadine Visser rounding out the field in 12.56.
Amusan had stormed into the final as a top contender after dominating her semi-final in 12.36 seconds. Despite a fierce start in the championship race, she couldn’t fend off Kambundji’s electrifying finish.
The Nigerian icon’s silver medal complements her historic 2022 triumph, where she set the standing world record of 12.12 seconds—a feat yet to be surpassed.
