Renowned gospel artist Tim Godfrey has voiced his frustration over the harsh realities faced by gospel musicians in Nigeria’s church circuit.
In a candid revelation, he expressed dismay at the demeaning treatment of gospel performers, especially when it comes to compensation for their craft.
Speaking in a viral X (formerly Twitter) clip, the “Wonder God” crooner shared shocking experiences of receiving unconventional payments—including farm produce and livestock—after performances.
“Performing in Nigeria has become a struggle because of how poorly artists are treated,” Godfrey lamented. “I’ve been handed yams, a live chicken, and other gifts instead of proper honorariums. How does that help me pay my bills?”
He further highlighted the financial strain such compensation causes, emphasizing that gospel artists still have real-world expenses like rent, school fees, and family obligations.
“It’s unfair and disheartening,” he continued, “We pour our hearts into ministry, yet our basic needs are ignored.”
The singer’s bold statement has ignited a fierce debate online, with many supporting his stance while others argue for a distinction between ministry and professional performance fees.
