Nigeria’s hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup remain alive as the National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Shehu Dikko, expresses confidence in overturning DR Congo’s eligibility dispute.
Dikko assures football fans that FIFA has yet to issue a final ruling on Nigeria’s protest regarding DR Congo’s alleged use of ineligible players in the crucial African play-off qualifier.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had formally lodged a complaint with FIFA, contesting DR Congo’s squad compliance. While recent FIFA fixtures listed DR Congo among the playoff contenders, Dikko clarifies that this does not signify a resolution of Nigeria’s case.
In an exclusive interview with The Guardian, Dikko stated, “FIFA’s decision is still pending, and we remain cautiously optimistic. The inclusion of DR Congo in the playoff lineup is procedural and not a final verdict.”
“Nigerians should remain patient,” he added. “Once FIFA concludes its review, we expect justice to favor Nigeria, allowing the Super Eagles to compete for a place in the 2026 World Cup.”
The contentious eligibility issue has sparked widespread debate, with Nigerian supporters eager for clarity. Dikko emphasized that FIFA’s official communication will provide definitive answers, urging fans to await the governing body’s conclusive announcement.
