Renowned Nigerian music video director TG Omori has opened up about the staggering financial burden of kidney failure treatment, revealing that even a monthly income of ₦1 million may fall short of covering essential dialysis costs.
During a candid podcast discussion, Omori shared his harrowing journey battling kidney failure, detailing the emotional and financial toll while awaiting a life-saving transplant.
Omori disclosed that while some hospitals charge ₦50,000 to ₦70,000 per dialysis session, he opted for a private facility where each treatment cost ₦150,000 to ₦200,000.
With patients typically requiring three weekly sessions, expenses can skyrocket to ₦500,000–₦600,000 weekly—an impossible sum for most Nigerians.
Reflecting on his ordeal, Omori emphasized how minimum-wage earners couldn’t afford even a single session, let alone the ₦31 million he estimated for a year of dialysis while awaiting a donor.
In a heartbreaking twist, Omori recounted how his brother’s donated kidney proved incompatible—despite nine months of searching for a match.
After the transplant, doctors discovered his body rejected the organ, forcing additional procedures that ultimately failed.
“They had to take me back to try forcing my body to accept it,” Omori recalled, noting his brother now lives with just one kidney.
The director stressed how the crisis reshaped his perspective on wealth and healthcare, stating: “Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy time.”
Omori publicly announced his successful 2024 kidney transplant, made possible by his brother’s sacrifice.
I battled kidney failure for over 6 months in a hospital in Ikoyi, with only close industry friends like Olamide, Fireboy, Asake, Rema, Young Jonn and Zlatan knowing about it.
