PUNCH Sports Extra reports that the draw for the women’s Olympic football qualifiers, set to take place today at CAF headquarters in Cairo, will determine Nigeria’s Super Falcons’ path toward securing a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
Scheduled for 1 PM Nigerian time, the event will be streamed live on CAF’s official YouTube channel, marking the start of Africa’s rigorous qualification journey.
A total of 35 national teams have registered for the qualifiers, showcasing the continent’s growing competitiveness in women’s football. The participating nations include traditional powerhouses like Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana, alongside emerging contenders such as Zambia and Morocco.
The Olympic football tournament in Los Angeles will feature only 16 teams, with Africa allotted just two berths—the same as Paris 2024, where Nigeria and Zambia clinched their spots.
CAF has structured the qualification process into five rounds, ensuring a fiercely contested path for teams vying for a place in the prestigious event.
As defending Olympic champions, the U.S. women’s team automatically qualifies as hosts, leaving 15 slots to be filled through regional qualifiers worldwide.
With such narrow and high-stakes competition, today’s draw will be crucial for Nigeria’s Super Falcons, who aim to build on their strong legacy in African football.
