Super Eagles

Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been dashed after FIFA officially announced the participants for the inter-confederation playoffs, with DR Congo taking Africa’s sole spot.

In an official statement released to media outlets, FIFA outlined the tournament’s structure and confirmed the six competing nations. With DR Congo’s unchanged inclusion, Nigeria’s last-ditch appeal against their elimination in the CAF playoffs has been effectively dismissed.

The Nigeria Football Federation had contested the result of the playoff clash against DR Congo, claiming that their opponents violated eligibility rules. The match ended 1-1 before Nigeria suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss.

Submitting a formal protest, Nigerian officials demanded a replay or disqualification of DR Congo, arguing that fielding ineligible players should invalidate the outcome. However, FIFA’s latest announcement contains no alterations to the list of qualified teams, sealing Nigeria’s fate.

With no indication of a reprieve, the Super Eagles’ campaign for World Cup qualification has officially ended. FIFA’s statement emphasizes that the playoff tournament will determine the final two spots for the 2026 World Cup, to be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The governing body explicitly listed the six contenders: “Bolivia, Congo DR, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname.” Their inclusion confirms Nigeria’s absence from the prestigious tournament’s qualifying pathway.
