Nigeria’s national football team faced an unexpected scare when their aircraft encountered serious technical issues during the journey back from South Africa.
The incident occurred shortly after takeoff from Luanda, where the plane had stopped for refueling, forcing the pilot to swiftly return to the Angolan capital.
According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the crew handled the situation expertly, ensuring a safe landing despite the alarming circumstances.
“Efforts are underway to secure an alternative aircraft and necessary permits to transport the team back to Uyo without further delays,” the NFF confirmed in its official statement.
This unsettling event comes just days before Nigeria’s decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic, adding pressure to an already high-stakes encounter.
Currently sitting third in Group C, the Super Eagles must secure a victory and rely on other results to clinch an automatic qualification spot for the global tournament.
With South Africa and Benin Republic ahead in the standings, Tuesday’s match in Uyo could determine Nigeria’s World Cup fate.
