Nigerian football legend John Mikel Obi remains optimistic about the Super Eagles’ chances of securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their current hurdles.

Sitting third in Group C with 11 points from eight matches, the team faces crucial encounters against Lesotho and Benin Republic to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Their first test comes against Lesotho at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane this Friday, followed by a decisive clash against Benin Republic at home next week.

Mikel urged the squad to rise to the occasion and deliver victories in these must-win fixtures.



“It would be unforgivable if Nigeria misses another World Cup,” the former captain emphasized on his ObiOne Podcast.



“Football runs deep in our veins. The responsibility rests with the players now—they must seize this opportunity.”
