Nigeria’s hopes of securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup were dashed following a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the CAF playoff final.
The Super Eagles started brightly, with Frank Onyeka’s deflected strike giving them an early advantage.
However, Mechak Elia capitalized on a defensive lapse to equalize for the Leopards, leaving the scoreline locked at 1-1 after extra time.
In the decisive penalty shootout, Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi faltered, sealing DR Congo’s victory and their place in the intercontinental playoffs.
The triumphant Leopards will now compete in a six-team qualification tournament from March 23–31, 2026, vying for one of the last two World Cup berths.
