Mikel Obi

Former Nigerian football icon Mikel Obi has urged the Super Eagles to stay focused amid reports of unpaid bonuses ahead of their crucial Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal clash against Algeria.

The ex-Chelsea midfielder emphasized the importance of unity and professionalism as Nigeria prepares for Saturday’s high-stakes encounter in Marrakech.

Rumors of discontent surfaced after players and coaching staff allegedly considered boycotting travel due to outstanding match payments for their four previous tournament appearances.

Speaking on his Obi One podcast, Mikel stressed the need for resolution: “Financial matters shouldn’t overshadow our quest for continental glory. The team must enter this match with clear minds and full commitment.”

He analyzed Algeria’s strengths, noting: “They’re a cohesive unit with exceptional individual talent. We’ll need our absolute best performance to progress.”

The 2013 AFCON winner called for administrative issues to be settled promptly: “All contractual obligations must be honored before kickoff. When players feel valued, they perform at their peak.”

A victory would mark Nigeria’s consecutive semifinal appearance, following their 2023 runner-up finish where they fell to host nation Ivory Coast in the final.

Mikel concluded with a rallying cry: “This squad has the quality to go all the way. Let’s channel all our energy into making the nation proud.”

The highly anticipated match kicks off Saturday night at Marrakech Stadium, with the winner advancing to face either Senegal or Mali in the semifinals.
