Rema

Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, faces allegations of instigating the arrest of interior designer Amaka Obasi following a contractual disagreement and alleged non-payment for services rendered.

Exclusive documents obtained by SaharaReporters reveal a signed Design Services Agreement between Obasi and Rema dated April 4, 2025. The contract involved Rema’s property at 13 Abiola Court.

According to insider accounts, Rema allegedly modified project specifications post-agreement without proper authorization or compensation.

Legal correspondence shows Obasi’s attorney asserting that Rema commissioned a professional studio installation – crucial for his music career – but subsequently refused payment despite completion. The dispute escalated when estate managers barred contractors from the site due to Rema’s outstanding property debts.

Additional complications arose when Rema failed to provide basic utilities, forcing Obasi to construct a water tank at personal expense – another unpaid service. Sources claim this financial impasse prompted Rema to involve law enforcement.

The situation took a dramatic turn on August 30, 2025, when Obasi, CEO of The Arden Lifestyle Company, attended what she believed was a mediation meeting, only to be arrested by FCID officers from Alagbon, Lagos.

Bank records indicate Obasi transferred ₦1.1 million to POS operator Nnena Joan Aneke, allegedly acting as intermediary for three identified police officers who initially demanded ₦7 million bail. Officers reportedly instructed Obasi to maintain radio silence to deceive Rema about her custody status.

While Obasi complied with police directives, authorities secretly obtained a remand warrant during her lawyer’s absence. Medical complications including asthma and hernia further complicated her detention circumstances.

Court documents reveal Obasi has initiated fundamental rights enforcement proceedings (Suit No. FHC/L/CV/1775/25) against multiple parties including:

  • The Inspector General of Police
  • Nigeria Police Force
  • Divine Ikubor (Rema)
  • Sean Okeke

Her legal team seeks:

  1. Declaration of rights violations under Nigerian Constitution and international charters
  2. Recognition of the dispute’s civil nature
  3. Perpetual injunction against further police involvement
  4. ₦1.105 million special damages for unlawful bail payments
  5. ₦50 million general damages
  6. ₦5 million legal costs

Police reportedly rejected service of court documents, claiming proper protocol required judicial delivery. Meanwhile, Obasi’s health deteriorated during repeated station visits, prompting formal medical deferment requests to the AIG’s office.

The family maintains this represents unlawful police intervention in a civil contract dispute, demanding:

  • Immediate police disengagement
  • Refund of allegedly extorted bail funds
  • Proper judicial recourse for contractual grievances
