Konga

Afrobeat pioneer Konga has voiced concerns about the neglect of Nigerian music veterans by contemporary artists, calling for greater acknowledgment and support from today’s stars.

During a candid interview on the Hits Don’t Lie podcast, the legendary musician highlighted Davido’s N250 million birthday fundraiser in 2021, suggesting that a portion could have revitalized fading industry icons.

While Davido generously distributed the funds to orphanages nationwide, Konga believes mentoring and empowering veteran artists could have created a lasting legacy for the music community.

He stated, “The new wave of artists must remember their roots. Their success shouldn’t overshadow those who paved the way. Many legends now struggle abroad because Nigeria’s music scene offers them no lifeline.

“Imagine if Davido had invested just N5 million each in veterans like Daddy Showkey or Baba Fryo—it could have reignited their careers. The industry desperately needs their wisdom and experience.

“Look at Lord of Ajasa—his impact was massive. Yet younger artists like Olamide dismiss history by calling Wizkid Nigeria’s greatest international act. That’s disrespectful to generations before him—Fela, King Sunny Ade, and Majek Fashek toured globally long before streaming existed.

“Lack of digital documentation doesn’t erase our contributions. Today’s stars stand on the shoulders of giants—simple humility and recognition would go far.”
