Kashim Shettima

Vice-President Kashim Shettima shared that President Bola Tinubu personally requested his presence in London to provide support for former President Muhammadu Buhari in his final moments.

Shettima disclosed this on Wednesday following a solemn prayer session honoring Buhari’s memory at the late leader’s residence in Daura, Katsina State.

He emphasized Tinubu’s deep sorrow over the passing of Buhari, stating that the loss extended far beyond Buhari’s immediate family or Katsina—it was a profound blow to Nigeria and the entire African continent.

Shettima noted that condolences had poured in from across the globe, directed at Tinubu, mourning the departure of an iconic statesman.

Reflecting on mortality, he remarked that every soul must face the inevitability of death, describing life as a transient journey where all await their final call.

”Each of us is merely a traveler, prepared for departure when destiny beckons,” he added.

Shettima offered prayers for divine mercy upon Buhari’s soul, wishing him eternal peace in paradise while asking for solace for his bereaved family.

He recounted, ”The president was visibly shaken by this tragedy. He dispatched me to London earlier to spend time with the late President.”

“I remained there for two days, and when his time came, Tinubu again tasked me and the Chief of Staff with escorting Buhari’s remains home.”

“After deliberation with Tinubu, Buhari’s family, and Katsina’s leadership, we agreed that Thursday noon would host final prayers in honor of his legacy.”

Shettima highlighted Buhari’s exceptional stature and assured that condolences remained open to Nigerians from every background.

The vice-president confirmed Governor Dikko Radda’s week-long stay in Katsina, alongside Buhari’s relatives receiving mourners in Daura, though formal observances would conclude Thursday.

”Announcements were coordinated between Tinubu, Buhari’s kin, and Katsina authorities,” he clarified.

Governor Radda paid tribute to Buhari’s immeasurable impact, urging leaders to uphold his principles of integrity and service.

He called for continued prayers, stressing, “Buhari dedicated his life to Nigeria’s progress.”

Radda expressed gratitude to Tinubu and Shettima for attending the burial, commemorating Buhari’s contributions.

Meanwhile, Information Minister Mohammed Idris praised Buhari’s enduring legacy.

”This gathering celebrates a leader who shaped our nation. May Allah grant him mercy,” Idris stated, noting Tinubu’s presence at Tuesday’s interment.

Labour Minister Maigari Dingyadi, who served under Buhari, lauded his anti-corruption efforts and economic stewardship.

”He fought tirelessly for Nigeria’s prosperity. We pray his soul finds eternal rest,” Dingyadi affirmed.

Dignitaries included Alhaji Mamman Daura, ministers like Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, Abubakar Kyari, and Lateef Fagbemi, alongside prominent figures such as Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, and former aviation minister Hadi Sirika.
