Grammy-nominated artist Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has condemned the comparison between Wizkid and his father, labeling it a blatant disregard for Fela’s monumental legacy.
Kuti’s outburst came as he addressed rowdy Wizkid FC members in a live broadcast, stressing that no contemporary artist deserves to be equated with the Afrobeat revolutionary.
He argued that such comparisons undermine Fela’s profound influence and reflect deep ignorance from fans.
“Wizkid FC needs to stop dragging Fela’s name into their debates. Claiming your favorite artist is the ‘new Fela’ is not just wrong—it’s outright disrespectful. The gap is enormous, and trying to bridge it only exposes how little you understand about Fela’s impact,” Seun Kuti fumed.
“Disrespect born from defiance can sometimes be understood, but this stems from sheer ignorance. Wizkid’s supporters repeatedly cross the line by dragging Fela into unnecessary online wars.
“Fan clashes have diluted the essence of music. Rivalries have grown so toxic that collaborations between artists are now sabotaged by overzealous supporters. Wizkid FC stands as one of the most misguided fanbases globally.
“Why must every discussion revolve around comparisons? If Wizkid’s music truly fulfilled you, you wouldn’t need to constantly measure it against legends. The spiritual void in his sound leaves fans desperate for validation,” he criticized.
“Wizkid FC should never utter Fela’s name again. Their attempt to hijack his legacy by crowning their artist as his successor is laughable. Such comparisons insult Fela’s memory. No fanbase exhibits more cluelessness than Wizkid FC.”
