Astronaut Owolabi Salis

Renowned U.S.-based attorney and astronaut, Owolabi Salis, has revealed a moving account of his final efforts to aid legendary Nollywood actor Kehinde Olusegun Akinremi, fondly known as ‘Chief Karan,’ whose passing recently sent shockwaves through the entertainment world.

Recalling their last interaction, the trailblazing Nigerian astronaut shared that on July 11, the beloved screen icon reached out via voice message, expressing his desire to celebrate both his 70th birthday and 55-year career milestone.

“By July 27, he sent urgent voice notes detailing his excruciating battle with appendicitis, requiring immediate surgery costing N700,000 – of which he needed N350,000 to proceed,”

The philanthropist attorney, often called “Oba Mekunu” (King of the Poor) for his humanitarian work, immediately transferred the requested amount that same day.

“On July 28, he gratefully acknowledged the support via voice note, followed by another message of thanks on August 1,” added the history-making explorer, who holds the distinction of being the first Black person to reach both polar regions in a single season.

However, the celebrated humanitarian confessed being “completely devastated by the unexpected announcement of the theater giant’s passing just days later – a shock from which I’m still reeling.”

With profound sorrow, Salis disclosed sending additional financial support on August 18 toward burial expenses upon learning the tragic news.

He passionately urged the Nigerian government, Nollywood community, corporations, and citizens to honor the late thespian’s legacy appropriately.

Describing Chief Karan’s departure as both the end of an era and a national tragedy, Salis emphasized how crushing it was knowing the actor passed just before reaching his 70th birthday – a milestone he’d eagerly anticipated.

“This loss is utterly devastating – the last news I expected to hear about such a vibrant cultural icon,”

“Chief Karan was a theatrical titan who dominated Nigeria’s performance landscape with unparalleled brilliance. His artistry placed him among legendary predecessors like Hubert Ogunde and Duro Ladipo.”

Salis, who ran for Lagos governor in 2019 under the Alliance For Democracy banner, noted how fans would profoundly miss the actor’s commanding stage presence – whether portraying noble kings, charismatic dons, or authoritative figures with his signature regal elegance.

“His defining moment,”
recounted Salis, “came through his riveting portrayal of Alaafin Kanran – a turbulent Oyo Empire ruler. His masterful performance earned him both critical acclaim and the admiration of late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.”

“This career-defining role cemented his ‘Chief Kanran’ moniker and endeared him to theater enthusiasts across Nigeria and beyond.”

Remarkably, Salis highlighted how the versatile actor “demonstrated extraordinary range when playing against type as a gang leader, seamlessly adapting his craft to deliver a breathtaking performance.”

“Chief Karan’s artistry captivated me completely – his works remained a cultural touchstone throughout my decades in America,” the astronaut reflected emotionally.

With deep sorrow, Salis shared how tragedy plagued the actor’s later years – losing his home, studio, and vehicles to fire, becoming widowed twice, and ultimately homeless. “That such an immense talent endured these hardships without substantial support is a national tragedy that should never be repeated,” he asserted.

He called for greater unity within Nollywood to advocate for members’ welfare, urging authorities to better support creative professionals throughout their careers.
