Nigeria’s House of Representatives has suspended legislative activities until July 7, 2026, following the conclusion of the current session.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas declared the adjournment on Thursday, emphasizing that the break will enable lawmakers to assess pending constitutional amendment drafts. He confirmed these proposals will take priority when the House resumes.
Abbas also highlighted that the recess provides legislators an opportunity to reconnect with their constituents and address grassroots concerns.
Prior to adjournment, the House achieved a significant milestone by approving the State Police Bill, with 289 members endorsing the initiative during a decisive plenary vote.
The session faced a brief disruption when Kaduna representative Bashir Zubairu raised objections, stating that the constitutional review committee’s report on state policing was distributed to lawmakers just hours before deliberations.
“Mr. Speaker, members only received this document upon entering the chamber today. Proper scrutiny is impossible without adequate time for review,” Zubairu argued.
