Renowned Nollywood legend Lere Paimo, celebrated for his unforgettable role as Eda Onileola, has sadly passed away at 86.

Seun Oleketuyi, a prominent entertainment journalist and founder of the Best of Nollywood Awards, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, revealing that the esteemed actor succumbed after defying stroke twice.

In his tribute, Oleketuyi wrote, “Chief Lere Paimo (MON) has departed at 86.

“A true warrior—Baba fought through two strokes with resilience.

“May his soul find eternal peace.”

Paimo was a towering figure in Yoruba performing arts, dedicating more than 60 years to theater and cinema.

Hailing from Oyo State and born in 1939, he launched his acting career in 1958 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group before joining Duro Ladipo’s troupe. There, he starred in legendary productions like Obamoro, where his portrayal of “Chief Basa” captivated audiences.

The actor achieved widespread acclaim with his iconic performance as Soun Ogunola in the Yoruba classic Ogbori Elemosho, solidifying his status as a cultural icon.

Throughout his illustrious career, Paimo acted in, directed, and produced numerous beloved films, such as Saworoide (1999), Agogo Eewo (2002), and The Campus Queen (2004), leaving an indelible mark on Nigerian cinema.

His contributions earned him the prestigious Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) honor from President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2005.

Adding to his legend, Paimo clinched ₦1 million in the 2014 edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, further cementing his place in pop culture history.
