Renowned Nollywood icon Jide Kosoko has been officially designated as the next Oloja of Lagos by the King Kosoko Royal Family, marking a historic moment for the esteemed lineage.
The proclamation took place on Monday at the revered King Kosoko Palace in Ereko, Lagos Island, where dignitaries and family members convened for the ceremonial announcement.
Leading the proceedings was Mutiat Ali-Balogun, the Olori Ebi General of the King Kosoko Royal Family, who formally endorsed Kosoko’s selection.
In a symbolic gesture honoring tradition, she elevated the hand of Kosoko’s daughter, signifying the family’s unanimous endorsement.
She was supported by Oyindamola Ayepola, the Deputy Olori Ebi General and head of the Meshimo Ruling House, underscoring the collective agreement.
The family emphasized that the selection strictly adhered to ancestral customs and legal statutes governing the appointment of Lagos’s traditional ruler.
The throne has been unoccupied since the passing of Adebola Ige on December 23, 2017, prompting a meticulous succession process.
A dedicated 16-member committee was established to oversee the transition, ensuring transparency and adherence to heritage protocols.
In October 2020, eligible princes from the Akinsanya Olojo Kosoko Ruling House underwent rigorous screening, with four candidates participating.
Following extensive deliberations, Kosoko emerged as the preferred candidate, aligning with tradition, Lagos State Obas and Chiefs Law, and the 1983 Registered Declaration.
After his nomination, the ruling house engaged with Lagos State authorities to secure formal approval for his coronation.
The upcoming rites include a traditional installation ceremony, to be officiated by Oba Rilwanu Akiolu, the reigning Oba of Lagos, in accordance with royal customs.
Kosoko, a septuagenarian luminary, began his acting journey as a child star in 1964.
With a prolific career spanning theatre, cinema, and television, he has cemented his legacy as an accomplished actor, director, and producer.
