Rema

Afrobeats sensation Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, recently opened up about the unique routines he follows before stepping onto the stage.

During an exclusive chat with Dazed at Milan Fashion Week—where he made waves modeling for Diesel—Rema disclosed his unconventional pre-performance habits, which include sipping tequila, smoking cigarettes, and offering prayers.

He emphasized the importance of coordinating with his crew for sound checks to ensure flawless execution during his electrifying performances.

“A shot of tequila, a quick smoke, a prayer, and a run-through with my team—that’s my ritual,” he revealed when quizzed about his backstage preparations.

Comparing runway modeling to live performances, Rema noted that concerts demand more stamina, explaining, “Performing tests your breath control, and you have to keep the energy high for the audience.”

When asked about his current musical influences, he shared, “Lately, I’ve been immersed in traditional Sudanese live performances—they’re incredibly inspiring.”

The artist also confessed that smoking remains his “guilty pleasure.”
