Renowned relationship expert and senior pastor of David’s Christian Centre, Kingsley Okonkwo, has called on men to raise their expectations by choosing financially self-sufficient partners rather than those who may become economic liabilities.
Through his social media platforms, Okonkwo highlighted the declining enthusiasm for marriage among men, attributing it to the perception that matrimony imposes financial strain instead of fostering mutual growth.
He stated, “Men must establish higher standards. Too many accept partners who drain resources, which is why fewer men see marriage as desirable—they view it as an obligation rather than a collaboration.
“Set clear standards: avoid marrying women who lack financial stability. Seek a true partner, not someone dependent on you. This shift may encourage more women to pursue self-reliance rather than treating relationships as economic relief.”
Okonkwo stressed that financial independence should be a priority for both genders, dismissing the traditional expectation of men as sole providers as “scripturally unsound” and “socially destructive.”
“The prevailing mindset contradicts biblical principles and harms societal progress. If women demand affluent partners, men should equally seek contributors, not dependents,” he asserted.
He condemned men who prey on financially vulnerable women, labeling such behavior as ego-driven manipulation, and encouraged fostering relationships built on equality and empowerment.
“Some men exploit financially insecure women to feed their egos and maintain control, but this dynamic is counterproductive. Every individual possesses potential—allow them to cultivate it,” he advised.
