Ayra Starr

Nene Aderigbigbe, the mother of Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, has opened up about severing ties with three longtime friends, sharing her reasons in a candid New Year’s reflection posted on TikTok.

Recounting moments that led to the friendship breakups, Nene questioned whether her reactions had been too extreme but stood by her decisions.

The first rift occurred when she discovered a trusted friend had shared their private conversation with her spouse.

“Looking back, I wondered if I overreacted, but I had valid reasons,”
she explained.

“This friend betrayed my trust by repeating our personal discussion to her husband. How could she? We were close, yet she violated that bond. From that moment, I cut all contact—and I stand by that decision.”

“When you confide in someone, you expect discretion. I never even knew her husband, so why involve him? If she’s listening, this is why our friendship ended.”

Nene’s second fallout came after inappropriate advances from a friend’s husband, which made her uncomfortable.
“Your spouse messaging me about his travels? Mummy Oyinkan, that’s crossing a line. I never signed up for that dynamic,”
she said firmly.

The third estrangement stemmed from continuous emotional drain—a friend unrelentingly venting about her 20-year marriage.

“At some point, you have to ask, ‘What do you want from me?’ I’m not a therapist. If you’ve endured decades of the same issues, maybe it’s time for self-reflection, not draining your friends.”

None of the former friends, she noted, ever received an explanation for the severed ties.

“They probably still wonder what went wrong, but my peace matters more.”
