Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe has been hospitalized amid the Club World Cup, raising serious concerns about his participation in the rest of the competition.
Mbappe was absent from Real Madrid’s first match of the tournament on Wednesday because of illness.
A club update on Thursday revealed Mbappe was hospitalized with gastroenteritis, a stomach infection causing diarrhea and vomiting.
‘Kylian Mbappe is dealing with severe gastroenteritis and has been taken to the hospital for further tests and treatment.’ the statement announced.
Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso addressed Mbappe’s condition after their 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal.
Alonso remained uncertain about Mbappe’s availability for their next group game on Sunday.
‘We’ll have to monitor his recovery,’ Alonso stated.
‘He’s been battling a serious viral infection, so we need to wait and evaluate his condition before the match.’
Real Madrid will take on Pachuca of Mexico in their second tournament fixture, with Alonso demanding a better performance.
The Spanish giants will then meet Red Bull Salzburg in their last group game on June 26.
