Real Madrid has officially launched its presidential election campaign as incumbent Florentino Pérez announced his bid for re-election, opening a 10-day nomination period ending May 23 for potential contenders to declare their candidacy.
The club’s electoral guidelines mandate stringent requirements for presidential hopefuls, including two decades of uninterrupted membership and a financial pledge of €187 million—15% of the club’s yearly budget—secured solely through personal assets.
Pérez, who ran unopposed during the 2025 election for his current term, reaffirmed his leadership ambitions during a media briefing this week.
Business magnate Enrique Riquelme, CEO of Cox Energy, has emerged as a possible rival, with Spanish outlets suggesting he may enter the race. Reports indicate Riquelme sought an extension to finalize his campaign, a request Pérez declined, citing his own swift 2000 election victory without preparation time.
If multiple candidates qualify, the electoral committee will organize a voting process. However, Pérez could secure another uncontested term—a pattern seen in every election since 2013, including his most recent victory.
Initially elected in 2000, Pérez spearheaded Real Madrid’s iconic Galácticos project before resigning in 2006. His 2009 comeback marked a golden era, with the club securing five domestic league crowns and six Champions League trophies under his stewardship.
