Betty Irabor

Media personality Betty Irabor recently opened up about a wedding experience that led to an unexpected intervention by her and her husband, broadcaster Soni Irabor.

The founder of Genevieve magazine shared the incident to highlight how individuals “mature and flourish at different paces.”

She described how the groom made an insensitive comparison between his bride and herself, remarking that despite Ms. Irabor’s age, his wife appeared older.

The comment visibly upset the bride, prompting Soni to address the groom while Betty comforted the distressed woman.

Her post read:“GROWTH AND TIME AFFECT US UNIQUELY

“Years back, Soni and I attended a wedding celebration. While entering the reception venue, we noticed a middle-aged couple posing for photos.

“Their joy seemed genuine in that moment.

“To our surprise, the husband recognized Soni as an old school friend, leading to enthusiastic greetings between us all.

“The warm atmosphere shifted abruptly when the man turned to his new wife and joked, ‘Can you believe Aunty Betty is over 60? She’s a decade older than you, yet look at you both!’

“An uncomfortable hush fell over the group.

“The bride’s expression darkened immediately. The mood became palpably tense.

“Recognizing her distress, Soni discreetly pulled his friend aside for a gentle correction of his remarks, while I engaged the woman in conversation to restore her comfort.

“Remember: Demeaning your partner—in private or public—constitutes emotional harm. It gradually erodes their sense of self-worth.

“Drawing unfavorable comparisons is particularly cruel, as we each develop at our own pace, bear different burdens, and show life’s effects in distinct ways.

“Communication in marriage should build up, not tear down.

“Persistent negative remarks dim a woman’s spirit over time.

“Eventually, her self-assurance wanes, and even her laughter becomes hesitant.”
