Bayo Onanuga, the Presidential Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, has come forward to defend the generous rewards granted to the Super Falcons by President Bola Tinubu.

Onanuga took to social media on Tuesday to address the backlash surrounding the $100,000 cash gift given to each player following their triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

In a post on his X account, he expressed bewilderment at the negative reactions from certain Nigerians, highlighting the disparity in public perception.

He contrasted the situation with the lucrative prizes awarded to winners of the BBNaija show, where the victor pockets a staggering N150 million.

“Considering that Multichoice awards N150 million to the BBNaija champion, it’s baffling to see criticism of President Tinubu’s commendable gesture toward the Super Falcons,” Onanuga stated. “The President has celebrated their excellence, dedication, and the resilient Nigerian spirit.”

President Tinubu’s rewards included $100,000 for each player, $50,000 for coaches and support staff, and the prestigious national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

Furthermore, every team member will be granted a three-bedroom home under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.
