Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has strongly criticized the delayed payment of allowances to the Super Eagles, labeling it a disgrace that tarnishes Nigeria’s image and undermines player morale.
In a candid Facebook post, Obi highlighted the irony of Nigeria’s national team, a symbol of pride and inspiration, being let down by administrative failures. He emphasized that such lapses occur at a time when the country desperately needs uplifting stories.
“The Super Eagles have consistently brought Nigerians together with their performances, yet they are now burdened with unnecessary stress over unpaid dues,” Obi stated. “This is not how a nation should treat its heroes.”
He challenged the government’s spending priorities, pointing to questionable expenditures while essential commitments to athletes remain unmet. Obi argued that neglecting contractual obligations to the team not only harms Nigeria’s credibility but also distracts players ahead of a high-stakes match.
“Our players deserve better than this. They should focus on the game, not financial uncertainties,” he stressed. “Nigeria must uphold its promises and restore dignity to its sports administration.”
