Peter Obi has expressed outrage over revelations that the Super Eagles are facing unpaid allowances, labeling it a symptom of a “nation failing its heroes.” This comes after midfielder Alex Iwobi exposed the subpar living conditions of the team in Rabat, Morocco, ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Gabon.

Nigeria’s 2023 Labour Party presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, has launched a scathing criticism of the Federal Government following reports of unpaid player allowances, describing the neglect as “unbefitting of a serious nation.”

The controversy erupted after Iwobi circulated footage highlighting the national team’s allegedly inadequate lodging situation during their World Cup preparations in Morocco.

In a strongly-worded statement posted on X, Obi condemned what he called “shameful priorities,” noting the government’s tendency to splurge on “frivolous expenditures” while neglecting those who bring honor to Nigeria.

The former Anambra governor argued that such treatment discourages excellence and patriotism among Nigerian youth, emphasizing that “national heroes deserve timely compensation and proper care.”

Calling for immediate reform, Obi challenged authorities to demonstrate genuine appreciation for athletes who elevate Nigeria’s global standing.

He stated: “It’s utterly disgraceful that footballers representing Nigeria with pride face financial neglect while billions are wasted on unnecessary extravagance.

“How can we expect greatness when we don’t honor those achieving it? This is precisely why some nations remain trapped in mediocrity.

“The message we’re sending to young Nigerians is toxic—that merit and dedication go unrewarded. Our sportsmen and women deserve better treatment and prompt payment—this must change immediately.”
