Ex-Super Eagles coach José Peseiro has revealed Ademola Lookman’s emotional journey after England’s snub, which ultimately steered him toward representing Nigeria internationally.
Peseiro detailed how the Atletico Madrid star’s frustration grew after prolonged exclusion from England’s senior squad, despite his impressive performances for their youth teams.
Born in London to Nigerian parents, Lookman progressed through England’s youth ranks, featuring for the U19, U20, and U21 sides before making the switch.
FIFA approved his nationality switch in early 2022, clearing the path for his debut with Nigeria’s national team.
The versatile attacker, who recently joined Atlético Madrid, has carved a unique legacy—becoming the first English-born footballer to compete in the Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga, and La Liga.
In an interview with Marca, Peseiro discussed Lookman’s high-profile transfer and his burning ambition to prove England wrong.
“This move to Atletico is pivotal for Lookman—it’s his chance to shine at Europe’s elite level and remind England of their oversight,” Peseiro remarked.
The Portuguese tactician also shed light on Lookman’s bewilderment at being overlooked despite his standout displays in youth tournaments.
“He confided in me about his disappointment. After excelling at the 2017 U20 World Cup and progressing to the U21s, the call never came. It baffled him—he believed he deserved a shot, but eventually embraced Nigeria as his footballing home,” Peseiro added.
With strong Nigerian heritage, Lookman’s transition to the Super Eagles predated Peseiro’s tenure, proving to be a masterstroke—contributing to 11 goals (6 goals, 5 assists) in just 13 appearances.
