Renowned Nigerian artist Peter Okoye recently opened up about a lesser-known chapter of his life—his near-miss with professional football before rising to stardom in the music world.
The chart-topping musician, best known as one-half of the iconic P-Square duo, shared a nostalgic Instagram post detailing his early athletic ambitions alongside vintage throwback photos.
Okoye disclosed that he underwent rigorous training at the esteemed Pepsi Football Academy, Nigeria’s premier breeding ground for football talents during his formative years.
His football prowess had developed to such an extent that he received a professional contract offer from Nigeria Professional Football League side Plateau United F.C. while still training in Jos.
Interestingly, the multi-talented artist revealed he was simultaneously pursuing musical aspirations alongside his football commitments during this dual-career phase.
A highlight of his post included archival footage featuring himself and Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel as teenage teammates, showcasing their shared football roots.
While the Plateau United offer represented a significant breakthrough, Okoye confessed his ultimate ambition was European football stardom rather than domestic league play.
In what he now recognizes as a twist of fate, circumstances redirected his path entirely toward the music industry where he has since achieved global recognition.
The music mogul used his personal story to inspire younger generations, emphasizing how unpredictable career trajectories can sometimes lead to unexpected success.
“Perseverance creates destiny! Football and music both fueled my youth,” he reflected.
“Jos gave me a pro football offer through Pepsi Academy, but my heart dreamed of European stadiums. Life had other plans—a microphone became my instrument instead of cleats.”
“Today, I stand as proof that detours can become destinations when you embrace the journey,” he concluded philosophically.
The football pitch and recording booth both called to me… Plateau United F.C saw my potential at Pepsi Academy, but Europe’s stadiums haunted my dreams. ⚽ Yet destiny placed a microphone in my hands. 🎤 Now my legacy echoes through afrobeats history. The universe writes the best… pic.twitter.com/FzV15iPeZD
