Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Omah Lay has sparked debate with his candid remarks about the Yoruba-dominated landscape of Lagos’ music industry, stating that artists from other ethnic backgrounds face significant hurdles in gaining recognition.
The singer opened up about his struggles during the listening party for his upcoming album, ‘Clarity Of Mind,’ emphasizing that he no longer seeks approval from the Lagos or global music establishment.
“The Afrobeats scene is largely centered in Lagos and predominantly Yoruba-driven,” Omah Lay asserted. “Fela Kuti laid the foundation, and he was Yoruba. Coming from Port Harcourt, breaking into Lagos wasn’t easy—only Burna Boy and I have managed to make an impact.”
He added, “At some point, I realized I needed to focus on my core supporters—my family and fans who genuinely appreciate my craft. The rest of the world can take it or leave it.”
